Trip Highlights The
river Kali originates in the Pithoragah district of Uttarakhand and
forms a natural eastern boundary between India and Nepal. The river
is named after the Goddess Kali but when it descends in the plains
and meets up with the Saryu river it is called Sarda or Sharda.
Put-in point for rafting would vary on the season.
Jauljibi / Jhulaghat for pre-snowmelt season (March / April)
Pancheswar for post-snowmelt season (May / June or Mid-Sept / Oct
/ Nov)
Besides being a put-in point for rafting, Pancheswar is also a famous
fishing site for the mighty Masheer and one could combine the rafting
expedition with an angling trip.
Day 1 : Delhi Pithoragarh
Departure from Delhi at 5 am. Drive 500 km to PIthoragarh (11 hrs
by car/13 hrs by coach). Alternative would be to take overnight train
to Kathgodam and take coach on arrival early morning. This would cut
road journey by about 5 hrs. Overnight at camp
Day 2 : Pithoragarh Jhulaghat - Rafting Drive from Pithoagarh to Jhulaghat (2 hrs)
Raft down 15 kms of grade 2+ rapids passing many stalactite and stalagmite
formations.
Overnight at camp.
Day 3 : Rafting Raft down to Pancheswar, the confluence of the rivers Sarju &
Kali. From here on the river is known as Sarda.
Overnight at camp.
Day 4 : Rafting Start rafting after breakfast and halt at Surnia river junction.
A small stream coming in from Nepal which affords a lovely camp-site
and fresh water.
Overnight at camp.
Day 5 : Rafting Raft to the confluence of the Ladiya river.
Camp overnight at Chuka.
Day 5 : Rafting Negotiate Chuka rapids (grade 3-4 depending on water level). Latter
half is a smooth sail through Purnagiri gorge. Put out at Boom.
Lunch & overnight in camp.
Day 6 : Camp Delhi Breakfast & departure for Delhi, arriving late evening after
430 km drive.
